Grid Tie

A grid tie system allows you to sell back extra power that you generate to the utility company.

A grid tie system is solar power that interfaces with the existing power transmission grid. Grid tie originated in Europe, where countries such as Germany and France mandate that the power company must purchase excess power created by solar panels connected to their grids. The system works like this: when you need power, it first turns to the solar panels to get electricity. If you need more power than the panels can provide, the system then turns to the power grid to make up the difference.

What makes grid tie systems especially attractive is what happens when you aren’t using much power. The excess power that your panels produce is then fed back into the power grid, where the utility company will actually pay you for it. Imagine getting a check each month from the power company instead of a bill: that is the appeal of grid tie solar power.
