Off Grid

Off grid solar applications have been in use for longer than their grid tie cousins.

Off grid solar power is the older form of solar power. All off-grid really means is that the photovoltaic system does not interface with the power grid in any way. When NASA scientists were developing the first solar panels, they did so precisely because they needed a power source that was wire-free and did not need to cart fuel around with it. Solar power was the ideal solution for this quandary, and within a few short decades, panels had been improved to the point where they were viable for in-atmosphere use as well.

Today off-grid solar power (such as the 110W Solar Kit w/ Digital Regulator) is still an attractive option for countries with underdeveloped power grids, as well as for remote locales such as wilderness cabins, where the existing power grid of even the most developed countries often does not reach. The major difference between grid tie and off grid is that off grid power makes use of a battery backup system to provide power during the night and periods of heavy storming.
