Off Grid Solar Panels

Off grid solar panels are a great option for remote locations and places without an existing power grid.

Off grid solar panels are actually indistinguishable in and of themselves from their grid tied counterparts. The same panel (Such as the 20-Watt Solar Kit w/ 4.5 Amp Regulator) can be utilized in both systems, the difference lies in where the excess power is sent. With off grid solar panels, excess production capacity is sent to a battery backup system. Lithium ion batteries are ideal for this purpose because they charge and hold charge well, and they can also handle a heavy draw when their power is in use.

When you decide to go for an off-grid setup, you will need to ensure that you have more than enough power coming in during peak hours to meet your daily needs. There are multiple reasons for this, the first is that the input for solar panels is variable, on cloudy days you will produce less power than on sunny days. The panels also won’t be producing at night. This means that you need enough surplus power built up to cover for these times. The other consideration is efficiency loss. When power goes through an inverter, some of the input power is lost in the conversion. Most inverters operate at about a 10% loss. Battery backup systems also have slight leakage over time. This means that your power production needs to be higher than your power use, because that slight loss is incurred before the power is converted to useful AC power.
