Portable Wind Power

New and exciting innovations in transportable wind power are evolving ranging from the giant to the hand-held.

At the most compact end of the market are tiny portable wind-powered gadget chargers. This hand-held wind turbine has three blades. More blades in such a small device would mean more resistance to the wind and simply would not be conductive to the size of the turbine. These devices can charge up your camera, phone or other portable electronics, gathering wind power from a miniature turbine as you walk, cycle or hike. Perfect for having power in places where an outlet cannot be found.

A group of designers, collectively known as ‘Pope Design’, are combining a heavy-duty truck with a portable wind turbine. The truck carries the wind turbine on its back and hydraulically erects the large turbine to recharge the vehicles own batteries and generate power for mobile units such as military camps or disaster areas. The lightweight fiberglass and thermoplastic tower give the turbine the resistance and stiffness it needs, without adding excess transport weight.

Perhaps the most impressive portable wind power generators are the floating wind turbines currently being prototyped. Offshore wind plants are used in commercial wind power, but there have been issues over the cost of installing these giant farms into the seabed and the potential damage it is doing to the sea floor. In Norway, the HyWind floating hull is supporting a 2.3 MW turbine and displacing 5,300 tons. This prototype is a large part of wind powers exciting future.
