Solar collectors are designed to harness the energy of sunlight into more easily useable forms. These collectors transfer the heat from the sun to a fluid (often water, but oils and gasses can also be used), which can then be stored or used in a number of different applications. These collectors are vital to any solar energy system.

The placement of solar collectors is extremely important to their efficient operation. Since direct sunlight is necessary, it is essential that they are positioned correctly. Here in the northern hemisphere, it is recommended that they be placed on a south-facing surface or rooftop. As solar collectors begin to warm there is a danger of heat loss through radiation. To counter this effect, a quality collector will have a sheet of glass over the collector itself as a means of trapping this radiated heat. This helps maintain the efficient operation of the entire system.
