A backyard swimming pool is often considered the crown jewel of a homeowner’s property. They can be the ultimate focal point for family events, parties with friends, as well as simply laying about on a warm summer’s day. However, there are many costs associated with pool ownership, not including the cost of installation. Some of the most basic of these costs are those that are associated with maintaining an adequately warm water temperature. Fortunately, there are many ways by which these costs can be minimized, and one of the more popular options are solar heating blankets.

Traditionally speaking, a swimming pool’s water temperature has always been maintained through the use of either an electric or natural gas-powered water heater. These systems have been used for many decades, and are still very popular for today’s pool owners. But while these systems are very effective, their downside is that they can add significantly to the homeowner’s monthly utility charges in the form of higher gas and electricity bills. By comparison, those that choose to upgrade to modern solar water heating techniques can achieve the same results, but without adding to their utility bills. Furthermore, solar water heating techniques are vastly superior to more traditional water heating methods when it comes to the environment, as solar power does not require the burning of fossil fuels.

One of the simplest methods of maintaining a proper water temperature for swimming is through the use of solar heating blankets. These blankets are somewhat different than a typical pool cover. They are designed to act as an insulation barrier between the water and the outside air, as well as a means of actually using the sun for water heating purposes. These blankets are almost always made from a translucent or semi-translucent plastic material. This material is used because it allows enough sunlight through to raise the temperature of the water beneath. The second aspect of these covers is that they are often riddled with small air pockets or bubbles. These air pockets act as a sort of insulation, as they help to keep the radiant heat of the water from escaping into the surrounding air. The combination of these two design characteristics (translucent material and air pockets) is extremely effective and can, in some cases, raise the water temperature as much as 15 degrees.

Many people find that a combination of solar heating blankets and a solar powered water heating system will allow their pool to be used from early spring to late autumn. Depending on your location, it is even possible to get year-round use of your pool through the use of solar energy. Furthermore, by using solar energy, one can save a great deal of money on one’s energy bills each and every month. In fact, the initial costs of creating a solar water heater and purchasing a solar blanket can be quickly regained through the money saved on energy bills. And most importantly, almost all of these items can be purchased through local businesses, or found through online sources.
