Solar hot water heaters come in two categories. These are active and passive systems. A passive system uses no electrical or mechanical parts, and instead uses the natural convection of the water to move from solar panel to tank. They are best suited to warmer climates where sunshine is almost a guarantee. These passive systems are highly efficient and less expensive than an active water system.
Active solar hot water heaters uses electricity to move the water from the solar collector to the water tank. This design has advantages as well. Unlike the passive system the water tank needs to be stored below the solar panel and the attic is the perfect place. Because of this, less heat will be lost and there is no risk of the system freezing.
Both these systems will generally use a gas or electric water heater as well to guarantee a hot water supply in the unlikely event of the solar heater not performing to its potential. Install a solar hot water heater and you will immediately see the benefits, and if you are lucky enough to live in a warm climate, you can see your heating energy bill diminish by 85%.
