Solar kits offer an affordable way to become familiar with solar power components and how a system works. A 10-watt DIY solar energy kit sells for about $200 and includes:

• 10-watt framed solar panel

• solar charge controller

•18-amp-hr SLA battery female lighter socket with fuse holder

• wiring

• instructions

These elements in solar kits all combine to collect and convert the sun’s rays into useable energy. The amount of energy generated by a system of this small size includes small electronics, battery chargers, cell phone chargers and LED lighting. You could even power a lamp using this 10-watt system.

Solar kits can be assembled DIY-style but it is advisable to have a working knowledge of electronics before attempting any installation. Professional solar installers can be found just about anywhere these days, so don’t feel bad about contracting one to help with installation.
