Solar Landscape Lights

Lighting has always been an important feature of any carefully crafted landscaping design. Whether the lighting scheme is simply a means of illuminating a backyard, or a more complex system designed to highlight specific plants or features, the right lighting can make a big difference. A popular way to brighten up a darkened property is through the use of solar landscape lights. These lights come in a wide variety of styles and designs, but more importantly, they are also the most economical means of creating lighting features within a landscape.

Photovoltaic technology has come a long way over the last few decades. When first introduced, solar panels were generally large, bulky things that were mounted on the roof of a home or business. These panels often took up the majority of the roof space, and even then were primarily used only for augmenting the power supply from the community grid. However, in recent years, advances in technology have allowed manufacturers to create solar panels that are significantly more compact, which has had the effect of generating a host of additional applications for their use. Landscape lighting design is one of the most common of such applications.

Most solar landscape lights come equipped with their own on-board solar panel. These panels are generally quite small, many of them measuring less than nine square inches. When exposed to the sun during daylight hours, these panels produce electricity, which is subsequently stored in an onboard battery. Once the sun goes down, a sensor switches the light on and the stored power inside the battery allows them to operate all night long. And when the sun comes back up, the light switches off automatically and the whole process starts once again.

The most important aspect of these lights is that the electricity that they use in their operation is one hundred percent, completely free. They are not connected in any way to your home’s power grid, and as such they do not add a single penny to your monthly public utility charges. The only charges involved with these lights are the initial cost of purchase. Furthermore, in most cases these lights can often last many decades before they need to be replaced, meaning that they are a nearly once in a lifetime purchase.

There is another advantage to using solar landscape lights when creating lighting features for your property, and that advantage is convenience. Unlike traditional landscaping lights, solar powered versions do not need to be connected to any hardwired power source. This means that there is no need to dig trenches and lay down power lines for each light in the yard. What’s more, if you should ever decide to alter your lighting design, solar powered lights can simply be picked up and moved to another location, unlike their more traditional counterparts.

Lastly, solar landscape lights are available in dozens of different styles and designs. From those that resemble urban streetlights from the early 20th century, to those that do not resemble lights at all (such as those designed to look like rocks or garden statues), there is certain to be something for everyone.
