Solar lighting can be categorized as industrial or residential. At this point, just about any lighting fixture, especially outdoors, is made to be solar powered. Industrial applications of solar powered lighting options include street lights, parking lots, parks, billboards and landscaping.

Popular residential applications for solar lighting include landscaping, solar light fixtures, solar powered lamps, flood lights and pathway lights. One enterprising designer has even engineered vertical blinds to soak up the sun’s rays by day and illuminate artfully designed LED pixels in the shape of a lamp or chandelier when the blinds are drawn.

Solar lighting is a great way to become familiar and comfortable with the technology and the components that shape it. A single outdoor landscaping pathway light with a solar collector cap could by the gateway to converting more and more of a home or business to run on solar power. There are plentiful online resources that spell out the technology in easy-to-digest bits.
