Harnessing solar energy for agriculture, horticulture and the preparation of food has been evolving for centuries. From the ancient use of curved mirrors to light fires, to the invention of the greenhouse to grow flora and food crops not designed for a particular climate.

Horace de Saussure, a French-Swiss scientist, took the principles of the greenhouse and made the first attempt to solely use the energy of the sun to cook. He constructed five miniature greenhouses, one inside the other, and was successful in cooking fruit with solar rays. This breakthrough experiment was in 1767, nearly 250 years ago, and today’s solar ovens owe much to that discovery.

Today, the solar oven is providing people in impoverished areas the opportunity to cook cleanly and healthy. Billions of people worldwide rely on charcoal, wood and dung to provide the heat to cook. This is having disastrous effects on their health.

The fumes that are produced from this method of cooking are known as “black carbon,” and are responsible for millions of people dying each year from respiratory conditions due to the inhalation of these deadly fumes.

In Haiti, after the tragedies of the earthquakes of January 2010, the Haiti Solar Oven Project (HSOP) was launched. This amazing project is distributing solar ovens to the homeless of Haiti as well as providing teacher/training to help educate the people and make sure no one has to go hungry.

In the luxuries of the first world, using a solar oven is more of an ecologically responsible choice than a life-saving apparatus. When you are travelling with your solar powered RV or boat, the solar power you have installed will not be sufficient to power an oven. And although most vehicles will have a gas-powered oven or a generator capable of providing the power, using it can eat up valuable energy. Not only that, a generator ruin the ambience of your trip with a loud hum, and using an oven in such a confined space will probably stink out your vehicle too.

Who wants to cook indoors on a camping trip anyway? And with a solar oven you can enjoy the weather and cook your food to the same heat that you would expect from a regular electric or gas oven. These lightweight and portable devices will reach temperatures of 360 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Using a solar oven means that you can enjoy a home cooked meal in the remotest of places. America not only has a fossil fuel crisis it also has an obesity problem too. Eating a nutritious and healthy meal can be very difficult when you are travelling; fast-food restaurants are conveniently placed at every exit. With solar ovens you can avoid the saturated fats and provide your family with a healthy meal cooked with all-natural, all-green energy.
