The backyard swimming pool has been a fixture of suburban America for several decades. For many homeowners, they are the ultimate luxury item and are often considered a status symbol of sorts. However, for most, they are a both a place for relaxation, and a focal point for gatherings of friends and family. It should be noted though, a swimming pool can require a significant amount of time, energy, and have course, money. Aside from the initial costs of installation, there are a host of continuing costs for operation and maintenance; all of which can put a strain on one’s budget. Fortunately, there are ways by which these costs can be minimized, and one of the most popular methods is through the use of solar pool heater panels.

Solar energy is one of the best methods for maintaining a proper water temperature for your swimming pool. It is not only available in an infinite abundance, but it is also ecologically sound and virtually free of charge. Unlike most traditional methods of heating water, these photovoltaic systems do not rely on fossil fuel-based energy such as electricity or natural gas. Instead, all that is required is exposure to sunlight and your water heating problems have been solved. The low cost, easy maintenance, and efficiency of today’s solar water heaters have made them one of the most popular options for today’s pool owners.

The most important components of these systems are the solar pool heater panels. These panels are the primary means by which solar energy is converted into hot water and without them these systems would infinitely less efficient. But while there are many different manufacturers that make many different panels, the basics are almost always the same. Essentially, these panels are nothing more than a box that is painted black and is covered on side with a sheet of glass. A tube enters the box at one end, and then doubles back and forth on itself until it exits from the opposite corner. As water passes through the tube and enters the box, energy from the sun is absorbed by the box and transferred to the water. The heated water then flows out of the box and back into the swimming pool, at which point the cycle repeats.

These panels can be used with both of the most common types of solar water heaters, active and passive. Passive systems are the easiest to build and maintain, as they have no moving parts or electrical components. Instead, they rely on the principle of thermal convection to circulate the water through the panel. Active systems, by comparison, utilize an electrically powered water pump for water circulation. These systems tend to be more efficient than their passive counterparts, but do require a small amount of electricity. However, this electricity can be easily produced by a small solar panel, allowing the pump to operate independently of your home’s power supply. Regardless of the type of system you choose to go with, a quality set of solar pool heater panels will be required.
