For many people around the country, a backyard swimming pool is the ultimate home accessory. They are a luxury item that can not only improve the value of your home, but can also be the ideal focal point for summer parties, family entertainment, and simply relaxing over the weekend. However, a swimming pool can be a costly investment. Aside from the cost of installation, there are ongoing costs as well, such as water heating, cleaning, and other maintenance requirements. Fortunately, by using a variety of solar pool products many of these costs can be kept to a minimum.
Solar energy is one of the best power sources for those that own swimming pools. Because the swimming pool season is generally during the hottest times of the year, it is also the prime time for using solar energy. The main advantage of using solar power to maintain your pool is that it can dramatically reduce the amount of money you spend on it each month. Basic functions such as water heating, pool filtration, and even lighting can all be done using devices that run strictly on solar power. Once installed, such devices run independently of your home’s power system, and do not cost a penny to operate.
Water heating is one of the most costly aspects of owning your own swimming pool. Traditional water heaters can use a great deal of electricity, thereby running up your monthly utility bill. This is one segment of pool maintenance that can benefit the most from the use of solar energy. Solar water heaters are one of the most popular solar pool products currently on the market. They can be purchased from any number of sources, or can be built from scratch with a little time and effort. These water heaters generally consist of three main parts; a solar collector, a water storage tank, and in some cases a small water pump. The pump is used to move water from the pool, through the solar collector and into the storage tank. As the water passes through the collector, the heat absorbed from exposure to sunlight is transferred to the water, and then pushed either into a storage tank, or back into the pool directly. Furthermore, the electricity that is needed to run the pump can often be generated by a small solar panel, making it completely self-sufficient.
Water temperature can also be maintained through the use of a solar pool cover. These covers are generally made from a translucent plastic material, often containing thousands of tiny pockets of air. As the sunlight passes through the plastic, solar energy helps to heat the water beneath the cover. However, the plastic material and the many air pockets do not allow much heat to radiate away from the water, thereby helping to maintain a proper temperature for swimming. These covers are very easy to come by and are relatively inexpensive to purchase.
Solar pool products can also be used for other swimming pool applications. Many pool owners are turning to solar powered lights for nighttime illumination. Water pumps used for filtration systems can also be powered by solar energy.
