Solar power is an excellent way to reduce your carbon footprint; it also saves money in the long run!
Solar power is an exciting technology that is just now finding the true worth of its usability. It can be highly versatile, and several sub-types of solar power have emerged in the past decade. However, the majority of solar installations still utilize solar panels, which themselves are made up of photovoltaic cells. These cells function in much the same way your eyes do. When sunlight strikes them, they undergo a chemical change and emit an electrical impulse. While your brain interprets the impulses your eyes give off when exposed to sunlight, photovoltaic cells are set up to create an electric current that can be used for powering electronic devices.
Solar power, when utilized for electric needs instead of running a sub-system, is generally divided into one of two classes: grid-tied solar power, or off-grid solar power. There are some differences in the equipment used between the two uses, but the primary difference between the two is that with a grid tie system, you can use solar power to offset a portion of your power usage. With an off grid system, solar power is going to provide 100% of the electricity you use, and the system must be correspondingly more robust because of this.
