Home > Solution Center > Solar Water Heaters > Active Systems

Active solar water heating systems have a greater viability range than their passive cousins. The only real difference is that active systems feature pumps for circulation and temperature controllers to ensure that water is kept within your tolerance range.
The pump allows you to put your water tank below the collector area, which means that in many cases, your existing water tank will work just fine with the retrofitted system. Removing the tank from on top of your roof and placing it back in the furnace room also eliminates the concern of structurally supporting 50 or more gallons of water over your home. The controller ensures that your water is always above your minimum set temperature, and will also stop circulation of thermal fluid if the tank is already warm enough, preventing your water from reaching dangerous heat levels.
Active systems are more complex and more expensive than passive ones, but they give you a greater degree of control over the process. There are two primary forms of collector for all systems, regardless of whether they are active or passive. They are flat plate collectors and evacuated tube collectors.
