Evacuated Tube Solar Water Heaters

The primary alternatives to flat plate heating are evacuated tube solar water heaters. Evacuated tubes are nearly exactly what they sound like: vacuum tubes. Now that doesn’t mean they’ll clean your floors, what it means is that instead of tiny diametercopper piping, the collectors use vacuum sealed glass tubes with heat collector tubing within them. The use of a vacuum to separate the collector surface from the outside world cuts the radiant heat loss from these units drastically, because while light can travel through a vacuum to get to the collector surface, heat cannot travel through a vacuum. Thus, nearly all of the heat generated by absorbing sunlight is kept within the system.

This results in much higher operating temperatures for evacuated tube collectors than for their flat plate cousins. In fact, the thermal liquid in a these collectors is often heated to a temperature well above the boiling point of water, to temperatures of 250 Fahrenheit.
